Police Commissioner Ray Kelly and Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance Jr. announced Friday the indictments of 41 alleged gang members in connection with two drug rings operating out of the borough. NY1’s Dean Meminger filed the following report.
Now, they’re busted. Forty-one alleged members of gangs that sold cocaine, crack and other drugs were indicted Friday.
“At a minimum, $1.2 million worth of cocaine was sold over the course of the two-year investigation,” said Police Commissioner Ray Kelly.
That’s a lot of money for gangs operating out of public housing developments. The so-called Blocc Boyz were busted at the Baruch Houses near the Williamsburg Bridge.
Police say the gang was comprised of crews named Stack and Cash is King, and they bragged on social media, showing off their earnings.
“They flaunted their illicit proceeds in front of honest, hard-working public housing residents,” said Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance. “In addition to their luxury cars parked outside their public housing buildings, they posted photos of their diamond-encrusted watches and pinky rings on the Internet.”
According to police, the gang actually made home deliveries of cocaine for clients who ordered large quantities of the drug.
Some of those people allegedly live on the Upper East and West Sides and may be arrested as well.
“Their clients ran the gamut from investment bankers to college students to low-income residents,” Kelly said.
Over at the Campos Houses on Avenue C, the Money Boyz were busted for allegedly selling drugs as well.
“We simply will not tolerate criminal behavior in our communities,” said John Rhea, the chairman of the New York City Housing Authority. “We will catch you.”
“That’s a great thing. We need to get rid of all these people. That’s a great thing,” said one resident. “They’re not going to stop. They’re not.”
Last week, 63 gang members from East Harlem were indicted. So far, in the last month alone, investigations ended with 122 members from six gangs being arrested in Manhattan.
